Nelson Mandela's prison number was 46664. It was assigned to him in 1964 when he was imprisoned on Robben Island. The number was used to identify him and distinguish him from other prisoners. 46664 became a symbol of Mandela's struggle against apartheid and was later used to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS. In 2003, Mandela founded the 46664 campaign to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa. Mandela served a total of 27 years in prison before being released in 1990.
